While coming to your regularly scheduled dental cleanings is an important step to take every six months, it is also important to maintain good at-home dental hygiene practices. One of the most crucial things you can do to maintain good oral health between your professional cleanings is to properly brush and floss your teeth.
When you properly bush and floss your teeth, you make steps towards preventing several oral health problems, including gum disease, halitosis (bad breath), tooth decay and the staining of teeth. At OS Dental, our dentist and team emphasize the importance of good preventive care. To help you better care for the health of your smile, our dentist and team have provided some instructions regarding proper brushing and flossing techniques. These tips are a simple way to improve your oral health.
Brushing Your Teeth
It is recommended that you brush your teeth at least twice per day using an ADA-approved toothbrush with fluoridated toothpaste. It may be a good idea to consider using an electric toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes are highly effective at cleaning teeth.
Be sure to use small circular motions when brushing each angle of your teeth. Do not scrub or apply heavy pressure to your teeth when brushing. Brush your tongue to remove fungi, bacteria, food and debris.
Flossing Your Teeth
Flossing is an important and necessary part of your oral health routine. Flossing can remove food and debris from between your teeth and below the gum line. Cleaning this area with floss can prevent bacteria from accumulating on your teeth.
Our dentist recommends using about 18 inches of floss while flossing. Use the floss between the teeth, moving in a C-shape around each individual tooth, moving toward the gum line. While flossing, you should move the floss up and down several times, ensuring that you properly remove debris from between the teeth. Make sure you don’t floss aggressively, as this could cut or damage your gums.
